Nosy Crow and Axel Scheffler return with Flip Flap Jungle

How many children’s book illustrators’ work can you recognise on sight? Quentin Blake is the first that springs to mind from my childhood, but from my children’s era, it’s Axel Scheffler.

He provided the marvellous characters and scenes for a succession of Julia Donaldson books, including The Gruffalo, but he’s also done his own (also marvellous) books, and a series of apps with publisher Nosy Crow.

The latest is Axel Scheffler’s Flip Flap Jungle, which was released this month, following in the footsteps (or rather, pawprints, given the subject matter) of Flip Flap Farm and Flip Flap Safari.

As with those, Flip Flap Jungle is a digital version of children’s flip books, where different segments of the page can be turned to create mixed-up images. Jungle animals, in this case.

“What do you get when you cross a monkey with a porcupine? Why, a monkupine, of course! What about a leopard with a armadillo? Well, that would be a leopadillo, naturally,” explains its App Store listing.

There are 11 animals, each with their own poem, and each of which can be mixed with another: which keen mathematicians will already have worked out means 121 possible combinations.

As you may have guessed, we love the illustrations, but we also love the poems that go with them too: you’ll have lots of fun reading these with your children, although you can also leave the voice narration to do its work, with words highlighted as they’re read out.

It’s a hoot! Axel Scheffler’s Flip Flap Jungle costs £0.79 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store.
