The Dr Panda apps have been very popular with children, and now there’s a new one: Dr Panda Farm, released today for iOS and Android devices.
The shtick for these apps has always been Dr Panda and his friends trying out different professions. You can guess from the title of this app what the focus is this time round: farming.
“Have you ever wanted to run your very own farm? Now you can with Dr. Panda! Escape to the countryside and learn how to become a farmer! Make bread from wheat, feed the chickens, take care of the cows, harvest vegetables, and much more,” explains its app store listing.
“From farm to table: Learn where local food comes from, what ingredients are needed and how to get them through six fun farming activities.”
There’s plenty to this app, too: for each of the activities, children have to tap and swipe on crops, animals and machinery to string together the necessary step to make food.
For example, in the screenshot above, first they have to grow their corn by tapping it or by watering it with the nearby can; then they spin the windmill’s blades to turn it into flour; then they roll out dough to make bread; and then they pop it in the oven to bake it.
At the centre of all this is a farm shop where characters queue up with their orders for bread, jam and other goods, which children have to produce to order. Experimenting on each of the activities will teach children what they have to do.
Here’s our video hands-on, showing how it all works:
It’s a fun app with a gentle educational message – this is how food is produced on real farms – behind it. The app may even spark your children’s desire to visit a real farm in the summer holidays.
