Roobarb & Custard return… as a book-app

Der-ner-ner NER, der-ner-ner NER, der-ner-ner NER-NER NER!

Which, if you’re not experienced in interpretating children’s TV-show theme tunes amateurishly transcribed, is the theme tune to Roobarb, the classic – to us Brits, anyway – children’s TV show that first aired in the 1970s.

Now Roobarb the green dog and his friend Custard the cat have returned, but in app form. Roobarb & Custard: When Custard was Grounded is the work of developer Box Of Frogs Media.

“Roobarb is planning a magnificent model aeroplane race and invites all his friends to join in. Mole, Rabbit and Rookie all line up with their planes to compete, but Custard has made his own sneaky plans with the dodgy Bovver Birds to get his paws on the prize, a scrumptious golden sponge cake.”

The story is told over 24 interactive pages, complete with audio narration from actor Tamsin Greig. But children can record their own narration if they prefer, too. And the app even features some clips of the late Richard Briers, who narrated the original series.

Roobarb & Custard: When Custard was Grounded costs £2.49 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store.

Now, other business: some parents may remember Roobarb (and Custard!) for another reason: a novelty-rave hit based on the theme tune that surfaced in the early 90s. What a racket! It’s no Sesame’s Treet…
