David Wiesner’s Spot app promises a ‘visual adventure’

A confession: David Wiesner is new to me as a children’s author. Which is crazy, because he’s received bags of critical acclaim, including three prestigious Caldecott Medals in the US for his picture books.

Anyway, my introduction to David – and for my kids – is a new iPad app called David Wiesner’s Spot, released last week by publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

It’s brand new, and it sounds really interesting: “A visual adventure—one that is never the same twice—unfolds as you travel through spaces that transition into one another via the pinch-and-zoom feature of your iPad,” explains its App Store listing.

“With a pinch and a zoom, you move through dazzling scenes, delving into worlds within worlds rendered in gorgeous original artwork by David Wiesner… Peek under an armchair and visit the dust bunnies in Lower Rügg, wander among the robotic shoppers in the marketplace of Mekanikos, or watch the glorious cat parade in Katzaluna.”

From my limited time with the app so far, I can see why David’s work in print books has won so much praise: it’s full of character and depth, which translates really well to this kind of exploration-based app.

David Wiesner’s Spot costs £4.99 for iPad from Apple’s App Store.
