Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit has been enjoying a new lease of life with a popular children’s animated TV show this year. Now the original – along with his friends – is getting a brand new app.
It’s called Peter Rabbit Me Books, but actually Beatrix Potter Me Books would be a more accurate name, as it covers a range of her famous animal tales. The app is the work of Penguin, and joins its Peppa Pig Me Books and Charlie and Lola Me Books on the App Store.
Like those previous Me Books apps, the stories are told through pixel-perfect digitisations of the original books. You can tap on the text to hear voice narration too, supplied by a pair of famous names: actors Richard E. Grant and Tamsin Greig.
Interactivity? Your kids won’t be flinging virtual carrots around the screen or playing games, but they can record their own narration and sound effects using the now-familiar Me Books feature of “hotspots”.
Those work by tapping the top-right corner and then long-tapping on text or pictures to record themselves (or a passing parent, grandparent, milkman etc) and saving the results.
Peter Rabbit Me Books costs £1.99 for iPhone and iPad on Apple’s App Store, and includes The Tale of Tom Kitten.
Other tales can be bought by parents through an in-app store at £1.99 per story. At the time of writing, they include The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, The Tale of Samuel Whiskers and The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies.
