Barefoot Books is one of the most marvellous children’s book publishers out there. Now they’ve teamed up with developer Made in Me for a new app: Barefoot Me Books.

It’s in the same vein as previous Me Books apps based on Beatrix Potter, Charlie and Lola and Peppa Pig: an app that lets you and your children read digital picturebooks, sold from an in-app store as individual purchases.

In this case, the app starts with six of Barefoot Books’ stories. The Three Billy Goats Gruff comes free with the app, while Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Gigantic Turnip, The Little Red Hen and The Tear Thief cost £1.99 apiece.

The stories look like real books, complete with turnable pages. Voice narration comes from famous names including Hugh Bonneville, Juliet Stevenson, Imelda Stanton and Debra Messing.

But the real fun comes when your children re-record any dialogue they want, attached to text or pictures in the books. In fact, each story can have up to three audio versions saved – for example, by different children or visiting grandparents.

More books are promised to be added soon. Barefoot Me Books is a free download for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store.
